Laboratory inventory management for research peptides
Effective laboratory inventory management helps research teams maintain traceability, reduce stock discrepancies, and support quality control. For peptide materials, a structured system should capture key product details at receipt and throughout use.
- Unique identifier: internal lot or item number linked to the supplier lot
- Product description: peptide name, grade, and research designation
- Documentation: certificate of analysis, shipping records, and any associated test reports
- Storage location: freezer, shelf, or controlled-access cabinet
- Status: received, quarantined, released, opened, or discarded
- Expiry or retest date: when applicable under internal policy
Labs should also record who handled the material, when it was moved, and any deviations such as temperature excursions or damaged packaging. Barcode or database-based systems are often preferred because they improve searchability and reduce manual entry errors.
For consistency, assign one person or role to review inventory updates and reconcile physical stock against records on a regular schedule. Products intended for research use only are not intended for human consumption.
